Happy Bi Week 2023 dear DIVA readers! And this year sure has served up some glorious BI-CONIC moments. Join us in looking back on some of the highlights, or should I say bilights?
“I’m bi, actually”
Season two of Netflix’s hit queer show, Heartstopper, gave us all the feels. Bisexual icon Nick Nelson continued his coming out journey and repeatedly reminded those around him that “I’m bi, actually”.
And we got to meet some new faces in this instalment of the show, one of those being Imogen’s former best friend, Sahar (who many fans, myself included, believe could be a love interest for Imogen) who’s a total bisexual babe.
Miley Cyrus’ throwback photo
In a recent viral video, the Flowers singer – who rose to fame as the star of Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana – looked back on the early days of her career. In the TikTok video, she reflects back on a 2009 paparazzi photo of her walking alongside Emily Osment, Taylor Swift and Demi Lovato. “If you guys didn’t know I was bisexual from this damn picture, I don’t know what’s wrong with you. I mean, hello.” We love this out-and-proud bisexual icon.

Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s Bongos music video
Back in 2020, Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion collaborated on their instant viral song WAP. We love women who love rapping about pussy. And earlier this month, the dynamic duo collaborated again on their song Bongo and the music video included a scene where they practically scissor each other (albeit clothed). Cardi B and Megan have both addressed their bisexuality publicly for years and despite this, they both experience bi-erasure within the mainstream and have even been accused of queerbaiting (which is also wrong because this term is used to address tropes in storytelling, and shouldn’t be used for individual people). I hope that Bongos serves as a reminder to start including these bi babes in the conversation when discussing bisexual artists.
Drew Barrymore and Natasha Lyonne are Aubrey Plaza’s “mommy” and “daddy”
Earlier this year a clip from the Drew Barrymore Show went viral which showed the bisexual host interviewing fellow bisexual icon Aubrey Plaza. Aubrey repeatedly says to Drew: “Be my mommy.” And the host responds with “What I wouldn’t do to put you to bed”, to which The White Lotus actor responds with “I’m a hungry baby”.
As if that didn’t cause queers online to spiral enough, in another clip, Drew interviews honourary lesbian Natasha Lyonne. Drew tells her: “You were with my baby. Aubrey Plaza is my baby now, and I’m her money.” And then, in a move that drove sapphics wild, Natasha replies with: “But I’m the daddy. I’m the daddy you guys were seeking.”

Alison Brie sparked bi joy online
The Community and BoJack Horseman star filled many queer hearts with joy when she appeared to casually come out as bisexual in a BuzzFeed Celebs video with her husband Dave Franco. The couple took it in turns reading out dirty Tweets about themselves to each other. And then Dave read one that said: “Listen, I’m bisexual for a reason, and that reason is strictly to be used in a threesome by Dave Franco and Alison Brie.”
And in an iconic moment Alison responded with: “That’s also why I’m bisexual.” And yes, this sparked an abundance of bi joy filled reactions online.
XO, Kitty’s portrayal of being bisexual in high school
Back when the trailer dropped for Netflix’s To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before spin off show, XO, Kitty, people assumed we were getting our usual serving of a heterosexual rom-com. But then, things got super queer. Fans have praised the way the show handled Kitty’s coming out journey as she comes to terms with her bisexuality. And in good news, Netflix has confirmed that we can look forward to a second season.
Reneé Rapp is the moment
The bisexual actor and musician has had quite the year. Her debut album, Snow Angel, has been a huge success and even had a Cara Delevingne-directed music video for its queer AF track, Pretty Girls. The star also appeared to hard launch her relationship with Alissa Carrington (again). And in an interview with Alex Cooper on the Call Her Daddy podcast, she reflected on the bisexual awakening that occurred after she experienced her first girl crush.
“The B in LGBTQ is not a silent letter”
Earlier this year, Prime Video’s Red, White & Royal Blue came out and blew LGBTQIA audiences away with its heartwarming MLM love story. Fans have praised the way Alex Claremont-Diaz’ bisexuality was portrayed and one of the most moving moments in the film comes when Alex Claremont-Diaz comes out to his mother (THE UMA THURMAN) as bisexual. She hugs him and says, “Well, you know, the ‘B’ in ‘LGBTQ’ is not a silent letter”. We love a supportive bi ally.
Bi Pride 2023
Bi Pride has always been one of the most hotly-anticipated events on the calendars of bisexuals and their allies. This year’s annual celebration was hosted by Lilly Snatchdragon, and featured Yasmin Benoit and Leanne Yau among its speakers. We can’t wait to see what the Bi Pride team has in store for attendees in 2024.
Bisexuality is on the rise
A recent study published in the Journal of Sex Research revealed 9.6% of people in the US have had both male and female partners, this means it has tripled since 1989, when only 3.1% was recorded. These statistics go to show the importance and power of positive bisexual representation and inclusivity.
