Following the announcement of their recent engagement, we cannot get enough of Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis! This football power couple have been giving us the couple’s content we’ve been wanting ever since they hard-launched their relationship in 2021. Sam Kerr is a legend in the footballing world, playing for Chelsea FC and the Australian national team (the Matildas).

Kristie Mewis is also an icon in soccer, playing as a midfielder for Gotham FC of the National Women’s Soccer League and the United States national team. These two have been gaining fans on and off the pitch… but how did they fall in love?

July 2021: The pair are rumoured to be together at the Tokyo Olympics

Rumours began to follow Sam and Kristie during the Tokyo Olympics when they went head-to-head on the pitch. The US won the match, meaning they took home the bronze. In a touching moment, Kristie went over to comfort Sam, leaving many to wonder if they were just friends or something more…

August 2021: Sam Kerr hard launches Kristie on Instagram

Not long after the Olympics, Sam Kerr hard launched Kristie on her Instagram with a sweet Polaroid pic of the pair. In an interview with Gaffer in 2022, the pair revealed that they had actually begun dating throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. The pair first met when they played a match against each other, but due to COVID, they were forced to communicate mostly online at the beginning of their relationship.

“It was about three or four months until we could hang out in person,” Sam revealed. “The first time we ever met there was quarantine so we had to spend two weeks together the first time we met. I was thinking if I don’t like her this is going to be awkward.”

2022: The couple open up about being long-distance

In the interview with Gaffer, the pair also opened up about their fairly private relationship. In particular, the pair spoke about dealing with the long-distance aspect of their relationship with Kristie training in the US and Sam in Australia and the UK.

“We set little milestones and we make time during the week where we’ll watch the same show and FaceTime or have dinner together or something. But it’s tough,” Sam said in the interview.

She continued: “We both just want each other to do so well in our careers. I don’t think you could be in a long-distance relationship with someone who didn’t get the sport. She fully gets it and I get it.”

October 2023: The couple spark rumours that they’re engaged

Last month, Kristie Mewis made football fans everywhere gasp when she posted a picture wearing an engagement ring. The couple had also been spotted wearing their rings casually in other photos that Sam had posted, leaving their followers to pick up the clues. One comment even read: “Soft launching their engagement is so on brand for them.”

November 2023: The pair announce their engagement

The couple finally revealed that they were in fact engaged in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE magazine. The Matildas striker revealed in the interview that Kristie has “just been everything” to her since the start of their relationship in 2020.

“[She’s] my biggest supporter, always listening to me nag and complain all, all of my crazy antics,” Sam continued.

We can’t wait to see this beautiful couple down the aisle!
