This event will explore the question: How has use of language influenced our portrayal, visibility and wider culture?

BY DIVA STAFF

To mark Lesbian Visibility Week, this Thursday, LGBTQI staff networks at production company ITN and global content creators Banijay Pride have joined DIVA to kick off a conversation around the word “lesbian”.

The event will be hosted by Penny James, 5 News producer and ITN Pride co-chair, via Zoom. The panel is full of incredible trailblazers: filmmaker Jacquie Lawrence, diversity expert Naomi Reid and entrepreneur and activist, Aisha Shaibu. The panelists will unpick why many lesbians shy away from the descriptor in favour of labels such as gay woman – or harder words such as dyke, which has been reappropriated with a rebellious element firmly at its core.

The event will explore the question: How has use of language influenced our portrayal, visibility and wider culture?

Join for a fun, irreverent session that looks at lesbian representation onscreen, in news, drama, ads and life in general, to see how we can reclaim the word “lesbian” and inbue it with positivity and pride. This session is open to all and attendees can submit questions via the chat box for the live Q&A.

This event is taking place on Thursday 28 April at 11 – 11:45am. Click here to join.
