EVENT: In Conversation with Kate Charlesworth, author and illustrator of Sensible Footwear: A Girl’s Guide

On October 24 2019, DIVA magazine teams up with London’s legendary LGBTQI bookshop Gay’s The Word to present an evening with author and cartoonist, Kate Charlesworth.

Recently long-listed for the Portico Prize, Kate’s graphic memoir Sensible Footwear: A Girl’s Guide pointedly portrays LGBTQI+ history from the 1950s to the present day against the backdrop of her own personal herstory.

Sensible Footwear: A Girl’s Guide

Join the author, her editor Corinne Pearlman (Creative Director at Myriad) and Erica Gillingham (queer poet, Gay’s The Word employee and DIVA’s books editor no less) in a dazzling discussion of comics, lesbian life, and British LGBTQI+ history.

As DIVA’s Erica Gillingham summarised recently, Sensible Footwear is, “a striking and heart-warming achievement in comic form [that] should be on everyone’s bookshelves.”

In her own words, Kate describes the intersectional memoir as moving, angry, and funny: “The book’s about love and friendship, mothers and daughters, individuals and communities,” and covers everything from the days of illegality to equal marriage.

Fancy getting prepped before the event? In the August of DIVA, editor Carrie Lyell interviewed Kate on Sensible Footwear – you can order a digital copy here if you missed it. (The print issue sold out, thank you #Earpers).

If that hasn’t convinced you to grab a ticket, rest assured that all attendees will receive a free drink, £3 off the purchase of Sensible Footwear on the night, and a 50% discount off a year’s subscription to DIVA Magazine. Not bad, eh?

Grab your tickets now! Oh, and all footwear is welcome.

Only reading DIVA online? You’re missing out. For more news, reviews and commentary, check out the latest issue. It’s pretty badass, if we do say so ourselves.
