Today (26 October) marks Intersex Awareness Day. Between 0.05% and 1.7% of the world’s population is intersex, a number some people say is comparable to the world’s population that has red hair.

Intersex is an umbrella term used to describe a range of variations that can affect genitals, gonads, hormones, chromosomes or reproductive organs. There are at least 40 known intersex variations.

Here’s what you need to know about Intersex Awareness Day.

What is Intersex Awareness Day?

Observed internationally, Intersex Awareness Day is held on 26 October annually to highlight the human rights issues faced by intersex people. It offers a space for political action and reflection.

Why is Intersex Awareness Day held on 26 October?

On 26 October 1996, the first public demonstration by intersex people in North America took place. It took place outside the venue in Boston, where the American Academy of Paediatrics was holding an annual conference. Leaders Morgan Holmes and Max Beck stated that they wanted to deliver an address about the long-term outcomes of non-consensual surgical intervention on intersex people.

When did Intersex Awareness Day start?

The commemoration day began officially in 2003, and has grown worldwide.

What can I do to celebrate Intersex Awareness Day?

One of the most powerful things you can do this Intersex Awareness Day is to educate yourself. Pick up books like Inverse Cowgirl by Alicia Roth Weigel, or Nobody Needs To Know by Pidgeon Pagonis. Watch films like Every Body (2023) or Ponyboi (2024). Follow prominent intersex activists or celebrities like River Gallo or Sean Saifa Wall.
