We’re delighted to have The L Word star back on the cover of our magazine for Pride season

INTERVIEW BY ELLA GAUCI, IMAGE BY SHOWTIME, COVER IMAGE BY KATE ROMERO

It was a serendipitous day when auditions for the legendary role of Shane McCutcheon in The L Word were narrowed down to two budding actors. One was all blond hair and smiles, complete with a prop comb in her back pocket. The other was brooding and mysterious, wearing a denim blazer and black beetle boots. “She looked like Mick Jagger,” Leisha Hailey remarks of Kate Moennig, in their joint-memoir, So Gay For You. “I thought, ‘Well, there’s Shane.’” Two things were made clear in this moment. One: Kate was the perfect Shane (and of course Leisha would later be chosen as the perfect Alice). Two: They were destined to be friends for life.

And now their memoir is being adapted for the screen, and the icons are back on the cover of our magazine, this time for their first joint cover. Here’s your teaser of what Leisha had to say for our exclusive interview.

Leisha Hailey on…

The L Word’s legacy: “It just goes to show you how the queerexperience is so universal”

Collaborating with Kate: “I think all the projects Kate and I do together are expanding our imagination”

The secret to a long friendship: “Stay open, give each other room, and never forget to have fun”
