Fans can’t wait to tune into Coronation Street to watch the highly anticipated lesbian wedding

Tonight, Coronation Street is set to make history, or rather, queerstory, as Carla Connor (Alison King) and Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers) – dubbed Swarla by fans – tie the knot.

This episode is notably taking place during Lesbian Visibility Week (20-26 April). Coronation Street is long overdue for a lesbian wedding. While this is not the first to take place on the beloved soap, it is the first that is expected to conclude successfully. Previously, Sophie Webster was jilted at the altar, and Rana Habeeb fell victim to the “Kill Your Gays” trope when she was fatally injured on her wedding day.

Speaking to Manchester Evening News, DIVA’s editor-in-chief Roxy Bourdillon addressed the impact of this onscreen moment. “It is so powerful to have this celebration of lesbian love onscreen. Alison and Vicky give such brilliant performances. They’ve captured the hearts of so many viewers and we’ve loved watching their relationship blossom. This is a joyful, special moment for queer Corrie fans.”

“Queer representation changes lives. It helps LGBTQ+ viewers feel less alone and more able to embrace our true selves. At the same time, it shows straight audiences that we aren’t all that different to them, which leads to greater empathy and a kinder society. Just like straight people, us lesbians fall in love, we navigate the challenges life throws at us, and sometimes we get hitched,” Roxy added.

Suffice to say, we’ll all be tuning in to watch this lesbian wedding. We love to see queer love on our screens.

Coronation Street is on ITV and Carla and Lisa’s wedding is set to take place on tonight’s (April 23) episode. The soap is also available to watch on ITVX.
