Each year we observe Pride Month throughout June. It’s a time both for celebrating our queerness, and how far the community has come in the fight for our rights. But it’s also a time to continue the fight for a better future for all LGBTQIA folks.

Actor and producer Sophia Bush commemorated the start of Pride Month, the One Tree Hill alum shared an inspirational message to her 4 million+ Instagram followers. Sophia reshared a graphic from @wetheurban’s Instagram account that read “Pride is important because someone tonight still believes they’re better off dead than being themselves.”

Underneath the image, Sophia wrote: “You are perfect. No matter how long it might take, you’ll find your people. And they will help you find more and more of yourself. It’s worth it. You’re worth it.”

It’s a big year for the actor. This is her first Pride since publicly coming out as a queer woman. Last October, People reported that Sophia was dating sports star Ashlyn Harris. As we welcomed in the New Year, she posted a reflective post to Instagram reflecting on the year that “betrayed” and “freed” her. And then the star got to officially come out as queer on her own terms as she was featured on the cover of Glamour’s April 2024 cover. For the cover story, she penned her own candid personal essay on her very public divorce from Grant Hughes and her new relationship with Ashlyn. She also opened up about her fertility journey and more.

I think we can all agree that queer joy looks good on Sophia.

Over on her own Instagram, Ashlyn posted a sweet montage reel of her and Sophia on holiday together. The caption read: “Chasing sunsets with you is my favorite.”

In her essay for Glamour, Sophia discussed the way in which she and Harris fell for each other. They both became friends during a turbulent time of transition before releasing they both wanted something more. Talk about a friends-to-lovers journey!

“It really took other people in our safe support bubble pointing out to me how we’d finish each other’s sentences or be deeply affected by the same things… It took me confronting a lot of things, what felt like countless sessions of therapy, and some prodding from loved ones, but eventually I asked Ashlyn to have a non-friend-group hang to talk about it,” she wrote. “In hindsight, maybe it all had to happen slowly and then suddenly all at once. Maybe it was all fated. Maybe it really is a version of invisible string theory. I don’t really know. But I do know that for a sparkly moment I felt like maybe the universe had been conspiring for me. And that feeling that I have in my bones is one I’ll hold on to no matter where things go from here.”

Happy Pride Sophia!
