When it comes to butch and masc visibility, we still have a long way to go. But in recent years there’s been a noticeable shift when it comes to butch representation onscreen, on the red carpet, in media and beyond. And we can think of no better way to get the year started than by swooning over some of iconic masc and butch celebs.
Before we dive into swooning over these hearthrobs, it’s important to note that while not everyone featured on the list identifies as butch, they are all undeniably icons for many mascs and butches.
Rosie O’Donnell
The comedian and actor has stolen many a DIVA’s heart over the years. But she truly stole our breath away when she made her cameo in Prime Video’s A League Of Their Own. She was serving butch royalty!

Lena Waithe
This trailblazing actor, producer and screenwriter is a total icon. There are few things we wouldn’t do for a suited and booted Lena. Why not join us in looking back at some of her best fashion moments?
JoJo T Gibbs
And speaking of Lena. We have to talk about the leading lady of her gamechanging TV show, Twenties. It was truly refreshing to see a show centre Black butch joy.
Tig Notaro
Just when I thought I couldn’t crush on Tig any harder, I saw her promotional photoshoot for her Handsome podcast which she co-hosts with Fortune Feimster and Mae Martin.
Melissa King
The openly gay winner of Top Chef All Stars brought dapper swagger to the Met Gala 2022 red carpet. This look is PERFECTION.
Amber Whittington
Amber Whittington aka @AmbersCloset was our Pride cover star last year. The celesbian and activist is an icon within the butch and masc communities, as well as the LGBTQIA community at large.
Megan Rapinoe
The former professional soccer player has brought visibility on and off the pitch. And we’ve been crushing on her through it all.
Jessica Betts
Not only has Jessica served up bucketloads of Black masc visibility, but her relationship with Neicy Nash has allowed Black queer love to be celebrated in the mainstream. And we’re head over heels for the both of them.
k.d. lang
I mean this list wouldn’t be complete without the iconic k.d. lang on it now would it? We’ve been on her for decades.
Jacqueline Toboni
Everyone’s favourite “soft butch” from The L Word and former DIVA cover star had to be on this list.
Lea DeLaria
We’ll never stop crushing over butch royalty and “Lord of the Lesbians” Lea DeLaria.
Jade Fox
The video creator and style influencer has helped many QTIPOC online to embrace their butchness and queer expression.
Samira Wiley
Name a butch/masc icon with a more mesmerising smile… we’ll wait.
Sara Ramírez
The non-binary actor has brought gender non-conformity to the mainstream through their portrayal of Che Diaz on And Just Like That…. They are undeniably an icon within the butch, masc and trans communities.
Katherine Moennig
The L Word star’s androgynous style and portrayal of Shane McCutcheon has cemented her as a butch icon for life.
Grace Petrie
Grace is so butch she titled her show Butch Ado About Nothing.
Jodie Foster
Throughout her career, the legendary lesbian has presented in a way that is often butch and femme. But in last year’s Nyad movie it was great to see the star take on a butcher role than normal. Her performance was exceptional.
Ruby Rose
The gender fluid lesbian has stolen many a DIVA’s heart.
Julien Baker
One-third of queer supergroup, boygenius, Julien is a total style crush. I am one of many boygenius fans who would very much like her to be my boyfriend.
Jane Lynch
The comedian and actor perhaps most known for Glee is an undeniable icon.
Horse McDonald

Hannah Gadsby
The non-binary comedian has been celebrated for being among the comedians who brought gender non-conforming visibility to the stage in recent years.
Claire Holt
The style influencer has helped many of her followers express themselves through her masc outfit inspo video series.
Anne Lister
And of course we have to include historical lesbian icon, Anne Lister. Suranne Jone’s portrayal of the entrepreneur left us gagged, while also proving to viewers that we have always existed.
