Forget breakup season, the entirety of 2023 has been full of celebrity breakups, divorces and separations. Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas. Britney Spears and Sam Asghari. Ariana Grande and Dalton Gomez, to name but a few. And of course, Jada Pinkett-Smith recently made headlines when she revealed that she and Will Smith had been separated for many years.

And while queer couples Ricky Martin and Jwan Yosef and Billy Porter and Adam Smith parted ways this year, it looked as if all our favourite celesbian couples were going strong. Which is why lesbian sports fans around the world were left devastated when People reported that Ashlyn Harris has filed for divorce from Ali Krieger on 19 September. The US soccer stars met in 2010, tied the knot nine years and share a daughter and son, Sloane and Ocean.

While this announcement will come as a shock to many lesbians and sapphics who have viewed the sports stars as #CoupleGoals, there had been growing speculation on social media that the power couple’s relationship was in trouble. Over the course of their relationship, they’ve often posted adorable photos together at events, but recently, the couple had understandably started attending separately, and no longer appearing on each other’s Instagram timelines.

Their marriage may be over, but their love story has provided wonderful WLW visibility. Their Allure cover was truly breathtaking; an intimate photograph of the two gazing at each other, leaning in for a kiss with the cover line “Love strong”. It has been great to see their love celebrated in the mainstream.
