“A friend brought her to my hotel room,” Lily explained. “And I tell you, in two minutes, I fell in love with her. She had on hot pants, stretchy boots that went up to her knee, and a little backpack. I don’t know what it was, but I was in love.”

Not long after their first encounter, the pair had their first date, beginning their decades-long love story.

In an interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Lily shared her reasons for not starring on the cover of TIME magazine. Despite openly living together, Lily said that she feared that appearing on the cover together would be tokenised. “I just decided that I wasn’t going to play their game,” she continued. “I wanted to be recognized for my performance.”

Two years later, in 1977, Lily did appear on the cover of TIME magazine for her talent, and was even hailed as the “New Queen Of Comedy”.

On an episode of The Rosie Show, Lily revealed the struggles that the pair encountered while working together in the seventies. “When Jane and I were doing specials, one of our writers, who was a really terrific person, said to me, ‘I think you and Jane should come to work together in separate cars,'” Lily said.

The powerhouse couple collaborated on their popular show The Search For Signs Of Intelligent Life In The Universe in 1985. After 42 glorious years together, Lily and Jane were finally able to tie the knot after the legalisation of same-sex marriage. They had an intimate ceremony on New Year’s Eve at a friend’s house.

Lily told PEOPLE magazine: “It was sweet. We didn’t have any rings, so I went into our jewellery and was digging out rings.”

January 2017: Lily thanks Jane in a SAG Awards speech
