A new campaign led by Dr Lisa Overton aims to understand queer dating online

DIVAs, we need you! Dr Lisa Overton from Middlesex University London wants to hear about your views and experiences. The results of this survey will be used to raise awareness about the highs and lows of LGBTQ+ dating in the digital world!

The survey only takes 10-15 minutes to complete and can be accessed here: https://eu.surveymonkey.com/r/M7WCB83. If you’d prefer a face-to-face conversation you can email Lisa Overton at L.a.overton@mdx.ac.uk for a zoom call to discuss all things dating and love.

“In 2020, I found myself single again and jumped into the world of online dating for the first time in almost 10 years,” Lisa explained as the motivation behind the campaign. “A lot had changed! There’s hardly any research about LGBTQ+ experiences, especially about women, non-binary and gender diverse folk — taking part in this study will help to change that.”

“I waded through fake profiles, learnt about the nuances of what actually counts as ghosting and found that there really wasn’t a lot of information about how to navigate this space – it felt like the rules were always changing. There’s hardly any research about women-identified, trans and non-binary, gender diverse folks experiences of dating apps but dating apps are on the rise and more and more of us use them to meet people – for dates, hook-ups, relationships, friendships and I want to make our experiences visible and make our experiences better!”

“I’m interested in your experiences of negotiating consent, pleasure and relationships from the ‘swiping’ left or right, chatting on apps to chatting ‘off app;, ‘in real life’ dating and the joys, challenges and life of all types of LGBTQ+ relationships.”

The results of this survey will be used to develop a poster campaign which will help to make queer relationships more visible in the dating world.

The project received ethical clearance and small budget to develop a poster campaign from Middlesex University. All responses from the survey and interviews are confidential and will be anonymised upon transcription. The poster series will be designed by LGBTQ+ Creative Arts Students at Middlesex University with graphic design experience. For further information you can email me at L.a.overton@mdx.ac.uk.
