There is a lot of work to do around the globe in the fight for equality

Once again, the UK has dropped down in ILGA Europe’s ranking of countries based on their record of LGBTQI rights. In the latest Rainbow Map, which was published on 12 May, the UK fell from 14th place, after previously being dropped to 10th place in 2021.

With the exclusion of transgender, non-binary and intersex protection in the conversion “therapy” ban and the rise of transphobia and homophobia, this is sadly not surprising.

Whilst the UK, Bulgaria and Romania are amongst the countries to have dropped in ranking, Denmark has moved up seven spaces to the number two spot. Germany introduced a ban on intersex genital mulitlation and Iceland also gained points for its legislative recognition of trans parenthood.

Pride month is right around the corner, and for anyone who comes up against people asking if we really still need a Pride month, yes, yes we do. There is a lot of work to do around the globe to ensure that LGBTQI people have equal rights.
