In honour of Black History Month, we’re dedicating our October issue to celebrating incredible queer women of colour and we couldn’t think of anyone we’d rather have on our cover than actor Maisie Richardson-Sellers. In an inspiring and heart-warming interview, Maisie opens up about her mixed race identity, leaning into her queerness and why she decided to set up her own film company, Barefaced Productions.

Maisie on…

Growing up mixed race

“I was always being called a ‘Bounty’ – Black on the outside, but white on the inside. I felt like neither half of me was enough”

Onscreen representation

“I’m fed up with having straight, cis, white people tell queer stories… I really think it’s time to push back and create the art that we want to see”

Her relationship with singer-songwriter Clay

“I’m with a wonderful woman and that feels right”
