While you’ve been bingeing Orange Is the New Black, you might have forgotten that Netflix have a pretty queer selection of films to offer too.
We’re sure you know about the classics, but there’s more to Netflix than just Blue Is the Warmest Colour and Below Her Mouth.
Get yourself a subscription or steal someone else’s, because we’ve got six underrated queer films for you to enjoy.
The Perfection
The Perfection is a 2019 psychological horror thriller. You may have missed this one because it’s fairly new, but it’s definitely one to watch.
It stars Allison Williams as Charlotte and Logan Browning as Elizabeth. Charlotte is a troubled musical prodigy who seeks out Elizabeth, the new star pupil of her former music school. Their encounter sends them both down an unexpected path with unbelievable consequences.
This one is for the horror lovers or the ones who want their date to protect them from a scary film.
Duck Butter
This film is seriously underrated, and it has queer classic potential.
Alia Shawkhat’s character (Naima) meets Laia Costa’s character (Sergio) in a bar and there is an undeniable connection between the pair. They go home together and make a pact to spend 24 hours with eachother, having sex every hour.
Their romantic experiment seems intimate and brilliant at first, but quickly the plan starts to unravel.
Elisa And Marcela
We can let you off for missing this one, because it is super fresh on Netflix. Also, it’s a Spanish biographical romantic drama film – so a little bit niche.
In 1885, Elisa and Marcela meet and form a great friendship, which grows into a forbidden love that they must keep hidden.
Following the true story of the first attempt at same-sex marriage in Spain, Elisa decides to adopt a male identity in order to marry the woman she loves.
Teenage Cocktail
Feeling trapped by their small town and parents, Annie and Jules plan to run away, using webcam modelling to make enough money to survive. At first the money comes rolling in, but the girls quickly learn that the consequences of their actions can be dangerous.
It’s been called an “intoxicating exploration of young love” by Perri Nemiroff as the girls grow close and explore their romance.
Margarita With A Straw
Get your tissues ready, this one’s a bit weepy. The story follows a rebellious young woman with cerebral palsy who leaves her home in India to study in New York.
During her journey of self-discovery, she unexpectedly falls in love (with a woman) and it is unbelievably sweet.
Loving Annabelle
Loving Annabelle is 13 years old, so maybe you haven’t missed it – but it’s certainly an underrated queer film.
It’s a romantic drama which follows the story of a boarding school student who falls in love with her teacher.
Let’s face it, it’s a fantasy we’ve all had whether we like it or not. What’s better than a leading lady who defies all authority to get the woman she wants? Seriously sexy stuff.
