Fans have been on the edge of their seats for the return of Wednesday season two as the titular character, played by Jenna Ortega, is set to solve more mysteries in the eerie Nevermore Academy.Â
Some viewers have speculated that the relationship between the eldest child of the Addams family, and her roommate, Emma Myers’ Enid, is queer coded. Though the dynamic between the pair will develop this season, the series creators have put the rumours of their sapphic romance to bed.
The sunshine character, Enid, has complemented Wednesday’s mysterious disposition, leading fans to wonder if the pairing could go further. However, in a recent interview with Decider, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, Wednesday’s creators, said that the show’s focus was “the idea of sisterhood and what that means”.
“It’s a show about female friendship, and people can read into it whatever they want, which is great. I mean, that’s the beauty of television, is people can take ownership, but they’re very much friends,” Alfred Gough asserted.
“It’s really a show exploring that female friendship.”
Miles Millar developed, explaining that their yin and yang dynamic is what makes their friendship so rich and complex.Their relationship is made deeper precisely because it is unexpected.
“It’s amazing that they’ve been embraced in that way. I think it’s something that’s very special, unique about that,” he said.
“You have a show that is about, at its core, these two teenage girls who need each other and have found that connection. And they’re very, very different.”
Though Wenclair shippers’ hearts have been shattered, Wednesday still promises lots of exciting new twists and faces. Ortega will be joined by the likes of Doctor Who star Billie Piper as Isadora Capri, Absolutely Fabulous’ Joanna Lumley as Grandmama Addams, and Boardwalk Empire’s Steve Buscemi as new principal Barry Dot.
Wednesday season two part one is now streaming on Netflix. Part Two will stream from 3 September.
