At just 20 years old, Bella Ramsey has carved out an impressive career onscreen. They’ve starred in films such as Catherine Called Birdy, Chicken Run: Dawn Of The Nugget and Requiem. Their TV credits are even more impressive, they are part of two of the biggest franchises in recent history: Game Of Thrones and The Last Of Us.
If, like us, you are a major Bella fan and want to learn more about the actor’s life, you’ve come to the right place. Let’s take a look at some fun facts you should know about the star.
They are genderfluid and identify as non-binary
Last year, the star publicly addressed their gender in an interview with the New York Times. They shared that their gender “has always been fluid”. In a later interview with British Vogue, Bella opened up about coming out as non-binary saying: “Although I was confident on set, I was very shy everywhere else. I’ve fought that word for so long. I didn’t want people to think I was just trying to be trendy. But it’s a very succinct way to describe to people who I am.”
Bella has shared their perspective on gendered award categories
In recent years there have been a lot of conversations surrounding gendered award categories. Bella has added their voice to the collective saying: “I feel weird about there being a whole new category. I think it’s more about language… I would love the award categories to be ‘Actress/Non-Binary Performer’ and ‘Actor/Non-Binary Performer’ then the performer can be submitted into their preferred category. It’s not a perfect solution, but that’s my take on it. I think it’s more about making us feel seen and included rather than being categorised.”
The Last Of Us star posted their comment on their Instagram story, and tagged the Academy Awards, the Emmys, the BAFTAs, the Golden Globes, the SAG Awards and the Critics’ Choice Awards.
The Last Of Us star has shared that the support they receive is louder than the hate
From the progressive LGBTQIA storylines featured in The Last Of Us and Bella’s thoughts on things such as gendered award categories, the star has faced their fair share of backlash and criticism online. But luckily, they are well aware of the “gay army” rallying behind them and they choose to celebrate the love over the hate.
They’ve earned the respect of the one and only Jodie Foster
At the start of this year, the Nyad star gushed about how inspiring she found Bella to be. It’s great to see greatness recognising greatness.
