The Last Of Us star Bella Ramsey has recently revealed in an interview to the New York Times that their gender has “always been very fluid”. The actor continued candidly about their gender identity, saying: “I’m very much just a person.” Choosing to select non-binary on forms, when the option is given, Bella didn’t state any preference for a specific label. And pronouns? “I couldn’t care less,” they stated.

The star went on to say that throughout their life when “someone would call me ‘she’ or ‘her’ and I wouldn’t think about it, but I knew that if someone called me ‘he’ it was a bit exciting.”

Bella has recently been nominated in the gender-neutral category for Best Young Performer by Critics’ Choice Movie Award after their knockout role in Lena Dunham’s 2022 medieval comedy Catherine Called Birdy. They got their breakthrough role as Lyanna Mormont in HBO’s Game of Thrones, and they now play Ellie in The Last Of Us series.

The Last Of Us is HBO’s action survival series that focuses on Joel (Pedro Pascal) and his mission to smuggle Ellie across a post-apocalyptic world in search of safety and hope. Based on the 2013 video game of the same name, it has already received immense praise for its adaptation. Radio Times has even called it “the best video game adaptation of all time, and it’s also a fantastic TV drama in its own right.” Canonically, Bella’s character is a lesbian in the video game – making her the first queer woman protagonist to be featured in a major blockbuster game. We’re excited to see if this storyline will make its way onto our screens.

Alongside other actors such as Emma D’Arcy and Emma Corrin, Bella Ramsey is pioneering a new path for non-binary actors. At only 19, we can’t wait to see what’s in store for their future projects.
