The comedian goes on a monumental road trip with Harper Steele to learn more about her transition

The highly anticipated documentary Will And Harper premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this week. The film is based on Will Ferrell finding out his close friend of 30 years – Harper Steele – has come out as a trans woman. Audiences will follow them on a road trip around America as they speak about this new subject they have never touched on before.

The two have been friends for a long time, as Harper wrote the show Saturday Night Live from 1995-2008, which was where she and Will first met. Their friendship has carried on 30 years later and now they are onto a new chapter after Harper transitioned in 2022 aged 61.

Will told Variety he had “zero knowledge” about the trans community beforehand, and that he didn’t have anyone personally in his life who was openly trans. The documentary hits on the important topic that until a situation is part of your life many people don’t have much knowledge on the subject, and the idea of being open to learning new things.

Will continued saying: “I think it’s a chance for all of us to ask questions.”

There are still plenty of people in the world that don’t have much knowledge on transitioning so having such a big name bringing a film out on the subject will hopefully broaden the horizons of a whole new audience and educate people on things they may never have researched before.

Alongside Will, Jessica Elbaum, Rafael Marmor and Christopher Leggett helped produce the documentary, as well as Josh Greenbaum who directed it.

In Variety’s review of the film, Peter Debruge, said: “It can sound like a cliché to say that any given movie is what the world needs now, but Will All Harper deserves that distinction.”

“By accepting his fledgling gal pal on his own terms – and asking how to make her more comfortable in her own skin – Ferrell sets the best kind of example.”

We think a box of tissues may be in order as we get to see the love between these two friends who are starting out on their exciting adventure.

There is no questioning how important this film is going to be for the LGBTQIA community and hopefully bring some more positive changes to today’s society.

No official release date for the UK has been announced yet, but let’s keep our fingers crossed!
