Happy National Coming Out Day! Whether you’re out, preparing to come out, or not able to at the moment, it can be affirming to see public figures living their truth in the spotlight. Here are some moments when celebrities took to social media to be visible in their truth. Some wrote lengthy captions, some used humour and some just said it short and sweet. It’s a nice reminder that there is no right way to come out.

Demi Lovato

In May this year, Demi posted of a video coming out in her own words: “Today is a day I’m so happy to share more of my life with you all – I am proud to let you know that I identify as non-binary and will officially be changing my pronouns to they/them moving forward.”

Raven-Symoné

Raven-Symoné kept things short and simple in this post. It was a great moment of celebration. A few years after this post she opened up about being gay in a really moving video for L/Studio.

Tommy Dorfman

In July, Tommy made this beautiful coming out post, reintroducing herself to the world. She gives thanks to the trans people who came before her and the trans women who taught her how to celebrate herself.

Pearl Mackie

During last year’s Pride month, Pearl took to Instagram to come out as a proud Black bisexual woman. With the pandemic and the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement, it was so impactful to see Black queer pride.

Kehlani

This TikTok video made people feel seen whilst also serving up some laughs. Many people in the community will relate to how sometimes coming out isn’t a big deal or shocking and can actually be underwhelming. Which is a great example of how far we have come.

Mae Martin

The Feel Good star wrote a moving caption when they came out as non-binary in April. Mae writes transparently about how binders help them to feel good and combat the dysphoria that can come up in photoshoots.

Emma Corrin

Our favourite addition to the cast of Netflix’s The Crown kept things short and sweet when she came out as queer. The location the picture was tagged under certainly gained some laughs!

Elliot Page

At the end of last year, Elliot came out as trans. He used his platform to reintroduce himself, thank his support network and raise awareness of the murders of transgender people, especially Black and Latinx trans women. He ends his caption with love for himself and the community.

Megan Fox

Despite coming out as bisexual a long time ago, Megan’s bisexuality is often erased. So it’s affirming every time fellow bisexuals see her claim her space within the LGBTQI community. The perfectly rainbow tipped nails are an extra bonus!

DreamDoll

Quite a few celebs decide to come out for Pride month, and this one certainly is eye-catching. DreamDoll came out unapologetically nude (other than the heels and socks) and proud atop a rainbow zebra.

Kaylee Bryant

Another short and sweet coming out post for Pride month that certainly made many queer hearts swoon with joy.

Michaela Kennedy-Cuomo

For Pride month, Michaela came out with this bright and colourful post and asked hetero allies to do more to support the community.
