A new biopic centring around the late musical icon Amy Winehouse has been confirmed, and Lady Gaga is rumoured to be playing the lead.

Notably, this project is backed by Amy Winehouse’s estate. Former attempts to make a film about the singer have been criticised by her father: speaking to the Guardian, he said the Oscar-winning 2015 documentary about his daughter “is both misleading and contains some basic untruths”. Director Kristen Sheriden was set to make an Amy Winehouse biopic in 2015 too, with Noomi Rapace starring, but the project never happened.

This new film about her life will be led by 50 Shades Of Gray director Sam Taylor-Johnson. Written by Matt Greenhalgh, and is expected to follow the making of her album Back To Black, one of the best-selling albums in UK history. The first woman to win five Grammy awards, Amy died in 2011 from accidental alcohol poisoning, aged only 27. Known for hits like Valerie and Rehab, her music remains hugely popular today.

Pop phenomenon Lady Gaga is a fan favourite to play the role due to her wealth of experience in both singing and in screen acting. Last year she played Patrizia Reggiani biographical crime drama House of Gucci, with the Guardian saying that her performance steered the film. She has also had recent hits like Rain On Me, and starred in the 2018 musical remake A Star Is Born to great acclaim. Her screen career appears to be taking off, with the singer also rumoured to appear in the upcoming musical sequel to Joker, alongside Joaquin Phoenix.

Lady Gaga is not yet confirmed to be taking the role, however. Other popular choices include Fifth Harmony star Lauren Jauregui, and singer Alessia Cara, who dressed as Amy for Halloween last year. Others want to see an unknown performer play the singer, with her father saying in 2018 that he could see her as “an unknown, young, English – London, cockney – actress who looks a bit like Amy.”

We don’t yet know when we can expect it to be released, but with the film confirmed, casting announcements could come any day.
