We’re excited to see which celebs will follow in the footsteps of Nicola Adams and John Whaite

Whilst we’re currently enjoying the warm sunny months, soon it will be autumn and the nights will become longer and colder. But do not fear, soon Strictly Come Dancing will return to our living rooms and viewers will be introduced to a whole new cast of professional dancers and celebrities decked in sequins, feathers and glitter ready to blow us all away.

The last series of the show was gloriously inclusive. From contestants representing various countries around the globe and with Eastender’s Rose Ayling-Ellis becoming the first deaf contestant (and winner) to Bake Off’s John Whaite and Johannes Radebe following in the footsteps of Olympic boxer Nicola Adams and Katya Jones and becoming the series’ second ever same-sex couple.

Whilst, John and Johannes made it all the way the finals, Nicola Adams unfortunately had to drop out early after testing positive for Covid.

It looks like we are hopefully in store for some more gorgeous LGBTQI representation when this year’s glitter ball goes up for grabs. It seems like we might get not one, but two same-sex couples this time around. A source told The Sun: “It was clear from audience feedback that fans wanted to see celebrities competing with a partner of the same sex if that was their preference. And the bosses have been very mindful of that for this series.”

“After an all-female pairing and an all-male pairing, this year they were keen to have both. The thinking is that same-sex pairings will be very much part of Strictly in the future.”

“Same-sex pairings will be very much part of Strictly in the future.”

Back in 2020, after only two weeks of dancing together, Nicola and Katya’s Couples’ Choice dance stunned audiences and we were all very excited to see more from the dance partners.

Last year, John and Johannes’ Showdance to You’ve Got The Love at the finals was a glorious celebration of queer joy. There was not a dry eye in sight.

Whilst both of the same-sex pairings attracted criticism from some viewers, they also received a lot of support and this representation on such a popular British show helped to open up many important conversations with people in the home.

I for one cannot wait to see what this year’s Strictly competition has in store for viewers, and I am certainly not alone.
