In DIVA’s exclusive interview, the 55-year-old opens up about lesbian sex, the importance of representation, and pulling on those iconic power suits to reprise her role as the inimitable Ms Porter.

Jennifer Beals on…

Working with a lesbian sex expert…

“It was kind of like being in high school in your sex ed class and your mind’s blown. And then some of it just made total sense. I went, ‘Oh yeah, I totally get that’. I learned what a dental dam was and things like that, things I didn’t know about. Strap-ons. I was like, ‘Wow, a whole new world’.”

What The L Word taught her…

“It broadened my understanding of activism and it broadened my understanding of love. I’ve gotten to meet so many amazing people because of the show and so many people who are dedicated to changing how we see one another. That’s been an incredible gift.”

Reprising her role as Bette Porter…

“I said to our costumer, ‘I just need a really good suit and some cufflinks’.”

Why Gen Q is so vital…

“We’re in such a place in history where to be other is to be vilified and, perhaps, be violently attacked. For that reason alone, it’s important to fortify representation and offer as much representation as possible, so that people know they are not alone, they are worthy of love and a place in the world. You are deserving and nobody can tell you differently.”
