One Tree Hill alum Sophia Bush has revealed that she and former footballer Ashlyn Harris quietly tied the knot in summer 2025. The couple shared the news yesterday (30 September) in a joint Vogue interview and memoir excerpt. The Grey’s Anatomy actor has said that they decided to share the news publicly because “the visibility piece matters” for young people who still don’t feel seen.
The lovebirds married in an intimate ceremony with Ashlyn’s children, Sloane and Ocean, there for the private celebration. Sophia commented on why they decided to wed this way: “When you get to this stage in your life, you begin to unpack what’s yours and what’s always sort of been for everyone else.” Talking to Ashlyn, she went on: “You’ve been playing in stadiums in front of 60,000 people since you were 15 or 16, and I started playing a character for tens of millions of people when I was 21. It’s such a privilege to be able to perform as an athlete or an actor, but it also comes with certain costs.”Ashlyn added: “It was so precious, and zero pressure. I will never forget it, and I think wedding days sometimes aren’t like that.”
While their guest list was small, the newlyweds visited friends and family across the country afterwards to break the news of their nuptials in person. Sophia enthused about how she didn’t want to keep sitting on panels referring to Ashlyn as her “partner” and how it feels amazing to call her “my wife”.
Ashlyn reflected on the importance of visibility: “This conversation is not about Sophia and I. We know the love we share. We understand how sacred and how pure our love is. But the visibility piece matters, because there are still kids hiding who don’t feel seen, and if we make room and space for one person, that’s worth maybe costing us a little bit of peace in the public eye.”
Visibility certainly does matter. It’s great to see Sophia and Ashlyn’s queer love proudly on display.
