If your screen time is anything like mine, then it’s likely that you’ve seen countless video explainers diving into a drama that has surrounded one lesbian bar in Massachusetts. In fact, the internet discourse has even sparked interest in potential cinematic adaptations of the story, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

What is The Last Ditch?
Located in Greenfield, Massachusetts, The Last Ditch is described as a “lesbian bar, rental venue, community centre”. Opening last year, the bar had a clear mission in terms of community care, mutual aid, and opposition to discrimination. The bar made it clear from the start that unhoused people are welcome at no cost, and it even has a “free store” which provides clothes, safer sex supplies and COVID-19 protective equipment. The bar is run through a mix of paid and volunteer labour. When the bar opened, it had a policy that patrons had to wear a KN95 mask unless they were eating, drinking or performing.
What started the drama surrounding The Last Ditch?
Fast forward to 2026, and The Last Ditch posted an announcement on Instagram stating that masks were now optional on Saturdays. This news was included in a round-up carousel, and many stated that this casual inclusion did not properly explain why the decision had been made. So why has this news gone viral weeks after the original post was made?
Well, it has everything to do with a now-viral article published by The Boston Globe. The article, entitled “A Western Mass. lesbian bar required KN-95 masks. When it changed the rules, all hell broke loose”, recapped the response to the bar’s new policy.
As reported by The Boston Globe, one commenter wrote, “Just say you’re being complicit in a mass disabling event and get it over with.”
Why did the bar choose to change their mask policy?
Since opening, the founders of the bar told The Boston Globe that they have struggled with foot traffic. According to The Boston Globe, the founders struggled to pay bills and sometimes even staff. The article cites this financial strain as one of the reasons the policy was changed to make masks optional on Saturdays, in the hopes of attracting more people to the bar.
Why has the internet become obsessed with this story?
It’s undeniable that a story about a lesbian bar in Massachusetts being cancelled has a certain drama to it. Social media platforms like TikTok have been flooded with video essays from LGBTQIA+ people discussing their opinions on the bar’s decision. Some have agreed with the original comments that this policy change is ableist. Some patrons of the bar have critiqued it for not being accessible. Others have spoken out about their fears about the right-wing media picking up this story to make fun of “woke” queer spaces. From memes to thought-pieces, this bar is continuing to dominate social media discourse.
