WNBA star Brittney Griner has filed for divorce from wife Cherelle, and is seeking joint custody of their two-year-old son.
The pair got engaged in 2018 and have been together for the last eight years. In 2024, they welcomed their son, Bash Raymond Griner, to the family.
Brittney submitted a petition for the dissolution of marriage on Thursday (30 July), stating that the couple had been separated since 24 July 2026. As reported by ABC News, the filing stated that the marriage “is irretrievably broken” with “no hope of reconciliation.”
The couple recently appeared together in the documentary The Brittney Griner Story, which detailed the Olympic gold medalist’s experience being detained in Russia after travelling with two vape cartridges containing cannabis oil. This resulted in nine months of imprisonment, during which Cherelle fought to bring Brittney home, working closely with the Biden administration. The WNBA player was eventually allowed to return to the US in 2022 as part of a prisoner exchange.
In the filing, Brittney also asked for “an equitable division of all marital assets”. Brittney and Cherelle have not commented publicly on the news yet.
Brittney and Cherelle met when they were both students at Baylor University in Texas between 2009 and 2013.
