LGBTQIA+ sports fans have been gaping at their phones ever since the news came in that sports stars and renowned power couple Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird had decided to split after nearly a decade together. In a joint video, Megan and Sue shared the news while thanking their fans and reflecting on the importance of queer visibility.
In a joint post on Instagram, the former couple wrote: “This hasn’t been an easy decision, but it’s one we’ve made together, with so much love, respect and care for each other. We’ve shared a whole life over the last decade, through big moments and in quiet ones, and that is something we’ll always carry with us.”

While this is undeniably one of the most shocking celebrity splits, it is not the first one that fans never saw coming. Here are four more breakups that shocked or devastated LGBTQIA+ fans around the world.
Samira Wiley and Lauren Morelli
Another WLW breakup we never saw coming also occurred in 2026. Back in January, Samira and Lauren announced that they were “amicably filing for divorce” after nine years of marriage.
Ashlyn Harris and Ali Krieger
Another breakup that rocked the world of sapphic sports fans was Sue and Megan’s good friends Ashlyn Harris and Ali Krieger, who announced their divorce back in 2023.
Cara Delevingne and Annie Clark and Cara Delevingne and Ashley Benson
Many of Cara’s relationships have sparked headlines and made people swoon. Many DIVAs swooned over her romances with both St. Vincent, aka Annie Clark, and Pretty Little Liars’ Ashley Benson. As much as both breakups shocked sapphic fans, we all got giddy when she started dating musician Minke.
