Sex And The City actor and activist Cynthia Nixon featured on this week’s episode of How To Fail With Elizabeth Day and discussed everything from her campaign to be Governor to her breast cancer diagnosis.

Cynthia Nixon catapulted to stardom when she landed the role of Miranda Hobbes on the beloved series Sex And The City in 1998. Although the series was a spectacular success, Nixon had some regrets about the lack of diversity in the programme. “I think one thing that always was not great about the show was how incredibly white it was. I feel like that was a big goal of ours when we did And Just Like That, to make sure that that was no longer the case.”

And Just Like That was the 2021 revival and a sequel of the original series which showed the leading characters at their peak exploring all there is to life.

In real life, Nixon had been doing the same as she started a political career, most notably marked by her 2018 campaign for Governor of New York against Andrew Cuomo. Despite losing the election, she looked back on it fondly in the podcast as “such a win” due to the change it inspired. “So many pieces of legislation that had been part of my campaign platform were then passed by the legislature, and Cuomo was shamed into it.”

Despite running for Governor in 2018, and being diagnosed with cancer in 2006, Nixon told Day that the scariest thing she’s ever had to face was Thanksgiving dinner. “I feel like running for Governor, I was very scared, but I think there are a lot of big things in life that I can take on. I think it’s the little things.”

Nixon, who has been married to education activist Christine Marinoni since 2012, also spoke about her fears of being in an unconventional family in the current political climate. “We’re not just a family with queer parents. Our nuclear family has a trans kid in it, and my wife’s sister’s family has a trans kid in it, and I think that’s more scary. Nothing is really off the table. I suppose they could try and abolish gay marriage, but I don’t feel like they could do it everywhere, I guess is what I feel.”
