Lucy Spraggan has released a new reworked version of her 2015 hit Unsinkable. The star shared the surprise news on Instagram after the song was used to celebrate an incredible audition on Britain’s Got Talent by a choir named Hear Our Voice, made up of those affected by the Post Office Scandal.
In a video showing her speaking to Simon Cowell, Lucy revealed that while the song was not initially supposed to be released so early, the audition spurred her on to launch the song onto streaming platforms.
Speaking exclusively to DIVA, Lucy said: “As soon as I saw it on the TV, I was like ‘We should probably just drop this single’. It was exciting. The song initially actually just embodied resilience because it was a time when I couldn’t get re-signed. I’d been dropped by the first major record label I’d signed to. I think I was just experiencing a lot of pushback and knockback.”
She continued: “The song was about not going through with other people’s expectations of your failure. I think to have it come back a decade later in a different sonic format is just amazing. What a privilege to have been able to put that out and to emphasise the message. A song about resilience and then re-releasing it 10 years later and saying: by the way, I’m still unsinkable.”
Lucy posted the incredible moment her song Unsinkable was used in a montage following the performance by Hear Our Voice. The 40-person group was made up of those directly affected by the Horizon Post Office scandal, and together gave a tear-jerking performance.
A more apt song couldn’t have been chosen to celebrate the bravery of a choir like Hear Our Voice. The Post Office Scandal involved hundreds of subpostmasters wrongly prosecuted due to faulty Horizon IT software, which falsely showed financial shortfalls. After receiving widespread support, the choir have quickly been dubbed frontrunners for this year’s competition.
The track is just one of the songs on her eighth studio album coming this summer. The album will feature reworked songs from her seven previous albums alongside brand-new songs. The album, entitled Other Sides Of The Moon, will feature beloved classics like Sober featuring Robbie Williams, and her debut hit Tea & Toast.
