Victoria Monét is an American singer-songwriter who has spent much of her career writing songs for an impressive array of industry talent. But she was catapulted into solo stardom when her Grammy Award-winning debut album, Jaguar II, captured the hearts of listeners around the world. Her lyrics and songs are beloved for the way they celebrate womanhood.
Want to learn more about the star? Here are five facts to start you off…
Her writing credits are seriously impressive
Victoria is an exceptional wordsmith. Her lyrics are loved by her fans for how inspiring they are and how clear it is that they come from the heart. As well as writing her own incredible songs, she has an impressive list of writing credits for other artists: 7 rings by Ariana Grande, Do It by Chloe X Halle, Reflection by Fifth Harmony, Déjà Vu by Coco Jones and Rather Be by Brandy, to name just a small selection.
She’s a mother
She does all that she does within the music industry while also being a mum. In an interview with Elle, she was asked how she stays grounded and finds peace, quiet and family time while also navigating the chaos of the industry. “It really comes down to time management for me. I think my daughter has taught me a lot of that. Before, when I would go to the studio, I’d be like there ’til 2 and 3am, just kind of like, ‘whenever the idea hits me, I’ll record.’ That was my home. And now I have a whole other home,” Victoria told the publication. “So when I go to the studio now, I’m like, ‘Let’s do it; let’s get this done.’ I’m quicker with ideas. I’m more efficient. ‘Cause I feel like I want to be in both places. Sometimes I’ll just bring her to the studio as well. So that definitely helps me to put my heart together, so they don’t have to split it up.”
In 2018, the musician publicly came out as bisexual
In her cover interview with Variety, she admitted that she was hesitant to publicly come out.
“I thought that conforming would make me go further. Being picturesque, straight…” she said. “It almost felt like you didn’t want to add any more weights to your ankles trying to win a race. It’s like, you’re already a woman, you’re already Black – you’d better pick a struggle.”
Victoria also referenced Whitney Houston and how the iconic singer wasn’t able to be public about her bisexuality. “I’m so sad she wasn’t able to do whatever that she wanted, and the world would [have] been fine,” she said. “Just do and love who you love. And so if I have the ability to talk about it without so much backlash… I know there are special people who hate it. But I feel like since I have the privilege to do so, I should and just be honest. So music has been a playground for sexuality. And some things I don’t even express in words will just come out in music because it’s on my spirit and soul to do so.”
She has previously dated Kehlani
Last year, Victoria spoke about her sexuality and past relationships on Emily Ratajkowski’s podcast High Low and finally confirmed that she and Kehlani once dated.
