Labour MP Dawn Butler has not let online trolls bully her off social media after she retracted her announcement that she was leaving X (formerly Twitter).

On 1 April, the beloved MP took to X to express that she would no longer be using the platform. She wrote: “I’ve decided to quit twitter/X because of all the haters and abuse I get. Especially when I stand up for minoritised groups.”

However, after an outpouring of positive messages from the community, Dawn decided to stay on the social media platform. She thanked her followers for their “thoughtful” messages.

“I was a little fed up of the negativity today, the bullies thought they had won,” she wrote. “But I will not allow the bullies to win or drive me off social media. God bless the positive people. Normal service resumes tmrw.”

Dawn Butler was elected MP for Brent South in 2005, and became the MP for Brent Central in 2015. She was the first elected Black female government minister in the House of Commons, and throughout her career has fought for LGBTQIA rights and the rights of other “minoritised” groups.

Last year, Dawn Butler spoke out against the government’s plan to send migrants to Rwanda.
