We can’t wait for the next instalment of The Boys’ wonderfully queer spin-off show

The Boys is one of Prime Video’s most popular series. It is a superhero show with a twist, the heroes don’t get up to much saving the day, instead, they are more a product of capitalism. It’s full of gore, twists and suspense. So when it was announced that we were getting a spin-off show that focused on a younger generation of supes, we were extremely excited.
Warning: There will be spoilers for The Boys and Gen V up ahead.
Gen V is a wonderful addition to The Boys universe. It adds depth to the story we’re already invested in and introduces us to some wonderful new characters. Our leading protagonist, Marie Moreau, is a new student at Godolkin University – a place that has supposedly trained the next generation of superheroes since 1965 – but as we found out, it was hiding a massive secret.
We get to see Marie form friendships with her classmates, one of those being Jordan Li, a shapeshifting bigender supe. It was great to see their dynamic go from rivals to friends to lovers. And while this is Marie’s first queer relationship, it was great to see that her arc wasn’t focused on coming out or her sexuality.
Instead, we get to see her explore the depths of her powers and uncover the truth behind Godolkin and try to actually save some lives (what a concept!).
In true The Boys universe fashion, the first instalment of Gen V ended on a shocking cliffhanger. Marie and the squad were left confined in windowless, doorless quarters after failing to stop Cate and Sam, who had the backing of Homelander.
Suffice it to say, we’re all anxiously pondering over what fates await these characters. But thankfully it has already been confirmed that we’ll be getting a second season. So without further ado, let’s dive into what we know so far…
When will the next season potentially be released?
It’s rare these days for shows featuring trans and queer characters to get a second season. But news of a Gen V renewal came in just shy of three weeks after it debuted. It’s had a great reception from fans, it secured the number-one series spot on Prime Video in 130+ countries within the first few weeks, so we’re glad they’ll be expanding this spin-off story.
It’s been confirmed that the team are already working on the next chapter. We expect to see the consequences of the first season of Gen V ripple into season four of The Boys which finished wrapping back in April and is now in post production.
Due to the strikes (which we fully support), we are unlikely to see the new series of The Boys this year, and it is speculated that we may not get it until winter/early spring 2024, with Gen V season two being late 2024 or early 2025.
Who will be returning?
While there was a lot of bloodshed in Gen V, the majority of the main cast remained standing by the end. So we expect to see the return of the following:
- Jaz Sinclair as Marie Moreau
- Derek Luh and London Thor as Jordan
- Lizze Broadway as Emma Shaw
- Chance Perdomo as Andre Anderson
- Maddie Phillips as Cate Dunlap
- Asa Germann as Sam Riordan
- Sean Patrick Thomas as Polarity
Let’s talk about the plot for season two
A lot of what could go down when we’re reunited with the cast of Gen V depends on how the story develops in The Boys’ next season.
By the end of the first season, Marie, Jordan, Emma and Andrea have made and enemy of Homelander and have been blacklisted as Godolkin murderers. There seems to be only one clear solution to their predicament. When they make it out of confinement, they must surely find a watch to team up with The Boys aka Butcher’s crew. We did see Butcher snooping around The Woods in the season one finale, and his squad could definitely use the powers of this quartet of supes.
We also of course have to talk about the new virus that was manufactured in The Woods to infect supes. We know that it is not yet airborne, but that it can be contagious through bodily liquids. It found its way into the hands of the head popping Victoria Newman, and although she has no intention of making the disease go viral there are two things I suspect may occur.
The first option being that she will weaponise it and use it to her advantage. The second being that, she accidentally gets infected, the virus doesn’t affect humans, but could they be a carrier? She did after all explode Edison Cardosa’s head who had been in contact with infected supes in The Woods, and we saw a bit of his blood land on her. I’m sure that whatever goes down she will seek out Marie, due to their kinship on having the same blood-based powers.
The stakes are higher than ever, and we’re all eager to find out more. As soon as we have updates we’ll be shouting it from the rooftops.
All episodes of Gen V and seasons one-three of The Boys are available to watch now on Prime Video.
