Jennifer Beals is a firm favourite among many of our readers. She’s a certified gay icon, and lifelong LGBTQIA ally and advocate. While she’s best known to DIVAs for her role as power lesbian Bette Porter from The L Word, she was first catapulted to fame for her role as Alexandra Owens in Flashdance. She has appeared in a versatile range of TV shows and films, and when The L Word’s spin-off aired, not only did she reprise her role as Bette but she took on being a co-executive producer.

Jennifer was born on 19 December 1963
And yes, that makes her a total Sagittarius. Sagittarians are believed to be independent thinkers, wicked smart and outspoken.
She can speak multiple languages
As The L Word’s Helena Peabody, Rachel Shelley, wrote for curve: “[Jennifer] speaks four languages, and I remember her taking Sanskrit classes at some point. She’s intellectually curious, which makes her stimulating company…”

The L Word fans mean a lot to the actor
She has a lot of appreciation for fans of the lesbian staple show and in our January cover story interview, the star told DIVA: “I have never seen a fan base like the fans of The L Word and I’m so touched by their acceptance of me.”
Telling diverse stories is very important to her
You can tell from the type of projects Jennifer has undertaken that diverse representation is important to her. And in a 2022 interview with The Guardian she had this to say: “I look to tell underrepresented stories, and sci-fi is such a wonderful way to explore those ideas – to explore those on the outside, redefining their power, finding their path and perhaps even lighting a way for others.”
She appeared alongside Ilene Chaiken, Kate Moennig and Leisha Hailey at the White House briefing to mark Lesbian Visibility Week 2023
The foursome were invited by Karine Jean-Pierre, the first openly lesbian press secretary, to appear and speak at the briefing and it was iconic.
She was hesitant about her role in Flashdance
Appearing on The Tonight Show, Jennifer confirmed that when she auditioned for Flashdance, she was hesitant to accept the role because she was studying at Yale. When she received the call it took her a moment to make the huge life decision, and well, the rest is history.
When appearing on The View she once stunned the room by sharing how many times she’d had sex in one day
We love a sex-positive icon. And when she was asked about her sex life and shared that she had had sex with one man 20 times in one day, she left the room shocked. She smiled as she said: “I don’t think it’s that unusual for a young woman.”
Being surrounded by nature is her happy place
In many of Jennifer’s interviews, including her ones with this very magazine, she addresses her love for nature and there are plenty of beautiful natural landscapes on her social media platform.
