Olivia Rodrigo and 1870s English aristocracy is a match made in heaven

No, your eyes are not deceiving you. There is a sapphic kiss in Apple TV+’s new trailer for their series The Buccaneers! Based on the unfinished novel by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Edith Wharton, The Buccaneers follows the story of a fun-loving group of Americans who end up in 1870s London.

With Olivia Rodrigo’s hit “all-american bitch” aptly playing in the background, the trailer teases scandal, secrets, and a whole lot of female friendship. But most importantly, we see a brief sapphic snog take place in the rain. What could be more romantic?

The Buccaneers’ soundtrack is packed with songs from queer faves like Taylor Swift, Boygenius, and Maggie Rogers. It also stars trans icon Josie Totah as Mabel Elmsworth, Kristine Frøseth as Nan St. George, Alisha Boe as Conchita Closson, and Imogen Waterhouse as Jinny St. George.

This exciting new series was led by an all-female creative team, created by Katherine Jakeways and directed by BAFTA Award winner Susanna White.

The first three episodes of The Buccaneers will air on Apple TV+ on Wednesday 8 November 2023, followed by new episodes weekly, every Wednesday through 13 December.
