Greta Gerwig’s instant pop culture sensation, the Barbie movie, may have come out in July, but it is safe to say that Barbie is most definitely still Barbieing. The film’s soundtrack was just as iconic as the movie, and featured artists such as Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa and LGBTQIA icon and ally, Charli XCX.
The latter’s song, Speed Drive, was a fan favourite and has already received more than 70 million global streams. Suffice it to say, we’ve all been eagerly anticipating the music video – which the musician finally released yesterday. The video sees the LGBTQIA icon and ally speeding through Los Angeles in a pink Corvette convertible.
We also get a surprise cameo from non-binary icon, Sam Smith, who video calls Charli on her Samsung Galaxy Flip5 and the two discuss “the new mix”. We’re of course crossing our fingers that we get to hear this collaborative project soon.
Charli then dons a pink baseball cap and oversized black coat and sings and dances as the Corvette wheels and skids around her. The music video is just under three minutes of hot pink fun.
Speed Drive is not Charli’s first foray into film. She wrote Hot Girl for A24’s thriller Bodies Bodies Bodies. This year, the musician is set to contribute another banger to the soundtrack of the upcoming lesbian fight club film, Bottoms. The talented singer will also be teaming up with Jack Antonoff for the soundtrack of Mother Mary, an upcoming drama where Michaela Coel and Anne Hathaway will be playing girlfriends. And that’s not all that we have to look forward to. Charli will be taking her turn in front of the camera making her acting debut in the reboot of the cult 70s horror Faces Of Death.
In the meantime, you can stream the Speed Drive music video on repeat.
