UK Black Pride will now be hosting their annual event on 19 August 2023 after concerns about safety have been raised due to a clashing football match. The original date was set to be 20 August 2023, but after the announcement that West Ham United F.C and Chelsea F.C would be playing a match at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on the same day, the UK Black Pride organisers decided to move the event to 19 August.
āThe safety, wellbeing and happiness of our UK Black Pride communities is paramount, and we recognise the potentially dangerous implications of having Black and brown LGBTQIA+ people sharing a space with a football fandom with a long history of racism, homophobia, transphobia and xenophobia,ā UK Black Pride said. āThe decision to bring the event forward to Saturday, 19 August is one that helps us ensure we can put on a safe and celebratory event for our communities.ā
This yearās UK Black Pride marks its 18th birthday celebration, highlighted by its very apt theme: Legacy. It is taking place at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on 19 August between 12-8pm. More information can be found here.
