Know for their iconic breakout role as Rhaenyra Targaryen in House Of The Dragon (and for the way they say ‘sbagliato’), Emma D’Arcy has spoken up about trans right in a recent interview for Vogue’s July Pride edition. “It’s not a good time, is it?” Emma said, “In the last couple of years, transphobia has become just broadly more acceptable.”

“We are in a scary period of contraction, especially where trans rights are concerned,” they continued. “I feel so deeply sad about the vitriol levelled against trans people and gender non-conforming people. I’m also incredibly aware that if I feel like this as a white nonbinary person, I know how much more hostile the environment is for trans women and for trans people of colour.”

The Golden Globes nominee admitted earlier this year to E!News that they had previously “felt that [they] had to present as a woman in order to find success in this industry.”

Despite their concerns about the current state of trans rights, Emma ended the interview with a beacon of optimism. “My hope is that the more trans people and gender non-conforming people that are visible in this industry, the more hopeful young people in the community will feel about the opportunities available to them.”

With the likes of Emma Darcy, Emma Corrin, and Bella Ramsey, we hope that more non-binary actors will make their way onto our screens soon.
