“How many times have you watched this?” “Yes…”

If you catch me fumbling over my words or gazing off into the distance with a flustered expression fixated to my face, it’s because yesterday Janelle Monáe released a music video for her new single, Lipstick Lover. I’ve been watching it on loop, and it’s made me internally scream “I am SO gay.”
The single is from their upcoming album, The Age Of Pleasure, which will be released on 9 June, bring on Pride season baby! But, if Lipstick Lover (and the title of the album) is anything to go by, I’m going to be a mess come release day.
The sex-positive music video invites viewers into a Black queer feminist pool party of our wildest dreams. The video is a glorious celebration of Black queer lives. Ever since publicly coming out and releasing the queerstory making Dirty Computer album, Janelle has dedicated their craft to uplifting, liberating and empowering the QTIPOC community. Lipstick Lover has definitely championed queerness and sexuality in the most unapologetic and explicit way so far, and I am SO here for it.
Here’s what people are saying on socials…
my QUEER heart is happy when Janelle releases new music.

Janelle Monae’s newfound dedication to public nudity is a marvel to behold. May she continue to be blessed with good lighting and premium moisturizer.
