Dame Kelly Holmes has had a life of achievements that very few can compare to. She served for 10 years in the British Army, and in 1998 she was awarded an MBE for her service. At the 2004 Summer Olympics, she won gold medals for both the 800m and 1500m, making her the first British athlete to do so in over 80 years. It wasn’t until 2022 that she took the brave step of coming out to the world on ITV’s This Morning daytime show. DIVA was honoured to get the chance to speak to her for our April issue.
Here’s a little from Kelly before we get into our teaser…
Kelly on…
Voicing support for the trans community
“I just thought I have to be true to myself that I do it based on humanity and on people.”
Her documentary Being Me
“The documentary was a way of me articulating the fear I’ve had for so many years and to enable me to have a platform that hopefully educates and informs people of the complexities of maybe being gay as well.”
Keeping her sexuality a secret
“I wouldn’t wish anybody’s life to be hidden behind closed doors”
