“Being part of the team has taught me so much about our wonderful community, and myself”

Greeting DIVAs! For those who don’t know me, my name is Nic and I’m DIVA’s new deputy editor (woohoo!). I started writing for DIVA in 2021, and my time as a professional queer has exceeded my wildest expectations.
I’ve got to interview celebs such as Pearl Mackie, Tegan and Sara, Abbi Jacobson and Emily Hampshire, and attended LGBTQIA events such as DIVA Awards, the Trans In The City Gala and Bi Pride UK. You’ve probably seen me gushing about my favourite queer shows such as Heartstopper, A League Of Their Own, First Kill, Gentleman Jack and The L Word. I’ve gotten to investigate topics that have put a fire in my belly such as the obstacles QTIPOC face when seeking healthcare and the experiences of LGBTQIA women and non-binary POC on dating apps. And of course, working with our fantastic team, as well as our wonderful contributors has been a dream.
Here are three facts about me…
- I’ve been openly queer/trans in some capacity for eight years and living authentically has hands down been one of the best decisions of my life.
- I once saw a TikTok which told you what your Stardew Valley love interest says about you. Apparently, people (like me) who go for Maru tend to be non-binary folks who are into women in STEM. Yep, and yep.
- My current obsessions are: Crying every Monday while watching The Last Of Us, theorising over Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Barbie movie and trying to keep my houseplants alive.
These are my hopes and aspirations as DIVA’s deputy editor
- Looking back on the original goals I set when joining Team DIVA, I’m glad to say I’ve given them all my best shot and hope to continue to build on these in my new role.
- Subscribers of our print magazine will be familiar with me on our screen page. 2022 saw the alarming rise of the #CancelYourGays trend. LGBTQIA folks deserve to see ourselves authentically represented onscreen. I want to do what I can to get DIVA and our readers behind shows that centre LGBTQIA characters, especially those within marginalised communities within our already marginalised one, so we can try to save our shows.
- I want to continue to uplift the voices of our community who are still all too often ignored.
- Working with our fantastic editor-in-chief Roxy Bourdillon has been a true privilege. Her vision for DIVA is truly inspiring. I look forward to continuing to work closely with her and working towards her mission for the magazine and our community.
- This is an exciting era for DIVA magazine, our team and pool of contributors are continuing to grow and I can’t wait for you all to see what queer goodness is coming soon.
