While a WLW love story born out of pageant culture seems like something straight out of a romcom, Mariana Varela and Fabiola Valentín’s recent marriage announcement shows that sometimes real life is even better than fiction.

Back in 2020, pageant winners Mariana (Miss Argentina) and Fabiola (Miss Puerto Rico) met at Miss Grand International (MGI) and appear to have started dating in secret. After two years together, they posted an Instagram reel announcing that they’d tied the knot and depicting a moving montage of their love story, including their proposal and ceremony.

Fabiola wrote in the caption: “After deciding to keep our relationship private, we opened the doors to them on a special day.”

The post was a glorious moment for WLW and queer Puerto Rican and Argentinean visibility that sparked much queer joy among their followers. At the time of writing, the reel has over 300,000 likes and 12,000 comments.

Mariana commented: “Thanks for all the love! We are very happy and blessed. I wish that the love you are giving us is multiplied! Endless thanks.”

Among the thousands sharing their congratulations was model Abena Appiah who wrote: “Omg congratulations MGI brought together a beautiful union.”

Many other fellow models and pageant winners flooded the post with their congratulations and blessings. The Miss Grand International organisation also sent well wishes to the couple.

And of course, everyone here at Team DIVA is wishing the newlyweds an abundance of queer joy.

Same-sex marriage became legal in 2010 with Puerto Rico catching up in 2015 following a US supreme court ruling. #LoveIsLove.
