Buckingham Palace has confirmed that Her Royal Highness, Queen Elizabeth II has passed away at the age of 96. She was Britain’s longest-reigning monarch.
The news came after doctors expressed concern for her health, with each of her children travelling up to Balmoral Castle to be with her. Her passing was confirmed just a few hours later.
“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon”, a statement from the Royal Family read. “The King and Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”
“The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family”, Charles – who will now be known as King Charles III – stated. “We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.”
“During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held.”
The only British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, she was crowned queen in 1952 at just 25 years old.
