The actor, comedian and DIVA cover star on stand-up, shame and self-acceptance

INTERVIEW BY CARRIE LYELL, IMAGE BY KATE HOLDERNESS

Our limited edition May issue includes a heart-to-heart between actor and comedian Bethany Black and DIVA editor-in-chief Carrie Lyell. Here’s a snippet of what Bethany had to say.

Bethany Black on…

Coming out

“Trying to be in the closet of being trans and gay for the first nearly 20 years of my life nearly killed me. And when I came out, everything got a lot better.”

Self-acceptance

“I wouldn’t change who I am for anything. Because I really like me and I didn’t for a very, very long time.”

Paving the way

“I’ve always felt a real sense of duty to try and make things easier for the trans people that follow me. It’s planting the tree for someone else to sit in the shade of.”
