R&B artist Biawanna has treated us to a DIVA Mix full of their fave new queer tunes
BY SOPHIE GRIFFITHS, DIVA MIX BY BIAWANNA
Struggling to find some new queer artists to add to your playlists? Don’t you worry, Biawanna has done the work and created a brand new DIVA mix just for you. 😍
Biawanna is a R&B/pop artist who takes inspiration from their family and Fijan/German heritage. They are driven to become part of the queer representation they wish had been present while they were growing up and they’re clearly well-versed in their queer music knowledge.
“All of these artists have inspired me this past year. I am grateful to have been able to work with a few of them,” Biawanna told DIVA.
They also gave us a few explanations of why they chose these particular tunes. Read along as you listen? 🌈🎵
I’m Blue – Kimmortal’s name was on a SXSW poster that used to hang on the front door of where I used to practice. I immediately fell in love with their music. Their presence made me feel less alone and inspired me to be myself in my music.
Fever – I M U R and I released Fever back in June. We wrote this song within a couple hours on the day we met. It marks the first time I’ve ever co-written a song with a queer woman and it is one of my favourite songs I’ve ever worked on.
Catching Feelings – Mathew V creates captivating pop music that makes me hopeful and excited for the future. He has this soulful songwriting style that I think is lacking in pop music sometimes. I can’t wait to see him rise to global success.
On My Mind – Quarterback is an artist with a beautiful voice and infectious stage presence. I listen to this song daily.
Push Away – des hume and I released ‘Push Away’ back in July. He is the first queer man I’ve ever co-written a song with. He is one of my favourite people to write with and I can’t wait for new music from him.
DON’T COME TO THE WOODS – I had the pleasure of being on the same bill as Backxwash for Glitterball Festival in Vancouver. They just released an album called DEVIANCY. It’s one of my favourite albums of this year.
