“This is something I would have died to have seen on TV when I was a young member of the LGBT community”
BY DANIELLE MUSTARDE
The American television network CW has announced that out, lesbian actress Ruby Rose (Pitch Perfect, Orange Is The New Black) will play out, lesbian superhero, Batwoman.
Rose’s character may be the first lesbian lead in any live-action superhero show, ever. Ever, ever, ever.
“The Bat is out of the bag and I am beyond thrilled and honored,” wrote Rose on Instagram.
“I’m also an emotional wreck… because this is a childhood dream. This is something I would have died to have seen on TV when I was a young member of the LGBT community who never felt represented on TV and felt alone and different.
“Thank you everyone. Thank you god.”
According to the DC Comics website, Rose will be playing the Kate Kane version of Batwoman, who:
“Armed with a passion for social justice and flair for speaking her mind, soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence.”
According to reports, the series is expected to drop sometime in late 2019/2020 — plenty of time to prepare our celebratory Batwoman outfits, right?
Still, despite the wait fans are already sharing the love across social media…
Some folk, however, aren’t so happy about the casting…
Fellow actor Ashley Platz, who also went for the role of Batwoman, responded to the hashtag #recastbatwoman, thanking fans for rooting for her, but urging them to support Rose, who she says will “work her ass off to fulfil the character.”
Another fan simply wants to celebrate our screens becoming that little bit queerer… đŸŒˆđŸŒˆđŸŒˆ
