Watch Taylor Mac and Matt Ray’s epic rock opera, Bark Of Millions, at the Schwarzman Centre in Oxford this weekend (12-13 June).

Presented by the Schwarzman Centre, this music and drag spectacle explores queerness through original songs, extravagant costumes and incredible artists such as Le Gateau Chocolat and Mama Alto. With 55 songs – and counting – this extravaganza champions LGBTQIA+ culture and history. In fact, every time Bark Of Millions is staged a new song joins the canon, creating space for more LGBTQIA+ voices to be heard. Book your ticket here.

Speaking about this work, Taylor said: “This is a hybrid work. You could think of it as an opera-concert-song-cycle-musical-performance-art-piece-play. It’s certainly structured like all of those things squished together.”

“Something you heard/will hear in the show (but in case you miss it) is that each song in the piece was inspired by a different queer person from world history. Some you’ll know. Some you won’t. The hope is that we’ll make you a little more queer than when you entered the theater.”

With composer Matt Ray and costume designer Machine Dazzle at the helm of this project, it’s a feast for the eyes and ears. The Schwarzman Centre is also showing screenings of Taylor’s documentary concert film about his legendary retelling of American history, A 24-Decade History Of Popular Music. The film tracks Taylor’s joyously queer, marathon 24-hour stage show, which reframes 240 years of American history using popular music.

Taylor Mac is a Schwarzman Centre Cultural Fellow for 2025/26 in partnership with Mansfield College.
