Netflix’s hugely popular, sexy and wonderfully diverse Bridgerton is back on our screens for its fourth instalment. If, like many fans around the globe, you always find yourself binge-watching every season and then twiddling your thumbs, wondering what to do next, we have good news. Here are five queerperiod dramas to help fill the void.

Queen Charlotte

If you are a fan of Bridgerton, it’s highly likely that you have already seen this spin-off prequel of the beloved show. The story centres on Queen Charlotte’s journey to becoming, well, Queen Charlotte and her love story with King George. And don’t worry, openly lesbian actor Golda Rosheuvel has plenty of screen time as the older Queen Charlotte. There’s a wonderful queer romance in this one.

The Confessions Of Frannie Langton

Like Bridgerton, this one is a book-to-screen adaptation. This one is adapted from the novel by Sara Collins. Set in the 19th century and full of mystery, this story follows the titular character who finds herself accused of murder. Prepare for a gripping unfolding of events where secrets will be revealed.

Dickinson

Based on the famous poet Emily Dickinson, this show makes 19th century events relatable to its 21st century audience. Emily’s relationship with her “best friend” turned sister-in-law Sue is a huge part of the story, and it’s a part that many historians have previously loved erasing.

The Buccaneers

Next up, another book-to-screen adaptation. Yes, there is a trend here. Based on the Edith Wharton novel of the same name, audiences follow five unruly American girls who enter polite British society in the 1870s. LGBTQIA+ viewers around the world quickly fell in love with the show’s sapphic storyline and praised the show for how it reminds us that queer people have existed forever.

Gentleman Jack

Inspired by the life of the entrepreneurial Anne Lister, aka “the first modern lesbian”, this series is essential viewing. It undoubtedly has one of the best onscreen lesbian kisses of all time. It has struck a powerful chord with lesbian and queer viewers around the world. Just look at how fans arranged for a #SaveGentlemanJack banner to fly over Anne Lister’s home following the show’s premature cancellation.
