Slo Pitch is set to be a ten-episode mockumentary series coming to Canadian streaming service Crave at some point this year. That’s right, the same streamer that gave us Heated Rivalry! It’s time to get excited. Here’s what we know so far.
According to the synopsis, the mockumentary-style show follows an underdog sapphic softball team – as in “six-time league losers” underdogs – as they navigate competition and the season.
Queerness is central to the show rather than relegated to the subtext: our leading character is the team’s coach who has been “brutally” dumped by her girlfriend – and ex-co-founder of the team – who now plays for a rival team. So lovers to enemies to… Well, you’ll have to tune in to find out! One thing’s for sure, romantic and competitive tensions will be running high for the team, iconically named “The Public Lass Brovaries”.
“It’s time to win the breakup, get the gang back together, and maybe even find new love over beers in the dugout,” the synopsis concludes.
This new series, Slo Pitch, seems to have a recipe for success. Blending lesbian storylines, sports and comedy, the show looks to tap into a growing appetite for sapphic ensemble storytelling. It follows in the footsteps of cult queer comedies like Bottoms. It covers sapphic sports stories proven popular with series such as A League Of Their Own, with its focus on queer community, rivalry and chosen family on and off the field.
The series is based on the LGBTQIA+ web series by the same name, which streamed on OutTV. The original web series was created by J Stevens, Gwenlyn Cumyn, and Karen Knox and following its success, they have all returned for the new adaptation. J Stevens is an executive producer and director of the TV series, while Gwenlyn and Karen have returned to write, produce and act.
Elliot Page is also involved in the project: his production company, PageBoy Productions, alongside Shaftesbury and BOSS & CO, is set to produce the series.
On screen, Frasier’s actor Jess Salgueiro will star as Joanne, the team’s coach. Emily Hampshire, a former-DIVA cover star known for her role on Schitt’s Creek, is also due to appear in a leading role. Women’s softball legend Ayami Sato will also be making a guest appearance. Ayami became the first woman to play in a Canadian men’s professional baseball league back in 2024, in a historic moment for the sport.
From the writer’s room to the screen, this project is being led by a team mostly made up of LGBTQIA+ and women creatives. This sapphic sports story is in safe hands. Although we don’t know exactly when the series will be dropping this year, filming was rumoured to have wrapped up recently so we’re hoping the wait won’t be too long – we’re already on the edge of our seats!
