Last Wednesday (7 Jan), Renee Nicole Macklin Good was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer. As of writing, a GoFundMe set up to help Renee’s widow, Becca, and her children has raised $1.5 million.
Thousands have marched in Minneapolis to protest the killing of poet and mother of three Renee. At the 2026 Golden Globes, stars like Jean Smart, Wanda Sykes and Natasha Lyonne attended the red carpet with pins that read “Be Good” and “ICE out”.
Speaking with MPR, Becca said: “This kindness of strangers is the most fitting tribute because if you ever encountered my wife, Renee Nicole Macklin Good, you know that above all else, she was kind. In fact, kindness radiated out of her.”
“Renee sparkled. She literally sparkled. I mean, she didn’t wear glitter but I swear she had sparkles coming out of her pores. All the time. You might think it was just my love talking but her family said the same thing. Renee was made of sunshine.”
In a video taken by the agent who shot Renee, she’s shown to tell ICE agents that everything was “fine” and “I’m not mad at you”. She was fatally shot when she tried to drive her car away from the federal agents.
Her death has sparked outrage across the country, leading to protestors demanding an end to large-scale deployments of ICE agents. Renee’s mother, Donna Ganger, told the Minnesota Star Tribune that her daughter was “probably terrified” during the confrontation.
In response to Renee’s death, Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey implored ICE to “get the f**k out” of the city.
Speaking about their son, her wife Becca wrote: “We were raising our son to believe that no matter where you come from or what you look like, all of us deserve compassion and kindness. Renee lived this belief every day. She is pure love. She is pure joy. She is pure sunshine.”
This tragic event followed the shooting of Keith Porter Jr. on New Year’s Eve by ICE officials. In 2025, 32 people died in ICE custody, making it the agency’s deadliest year in the last two decades.
