Trailblazing activist Lady Phyll has announced that she is engaged. The Chief Executive of UK Black Pride shared the news on Instagram yesterday (2 Nov) alongside pictures of her fiancée proposing in front of an illuminated heart.

In the caption, Lady Phyll wrote a touching and heartfelt declaration of love. “As Black lesbian women, we have always found ways to love on each other, to see each other, to choose each other, quietly, boldly, publicly, and without apology. And this time, I am saying yes to all of it as I’m at my best and ready to receive it all.”

She shared that her fiancée, Lisa, had proposed in Morocco on 14 October. Lady Phyll also revealed that while it was supposed to be a surprise proposal, she had found out about the plan before and decided to re-propose to Lisa.

“I’ve sat with this for a while, wanting to cherish it quietly before sharing it loudly,” she added. “Because this kind of love, Black, Lesbian-Queer, Woman-Centred Love — deserves softness, celebration, and sacred pause.”

“So here we are. Two women choosing each other, again and again. I’m saying yes to love. Yes to partnership. Yes to joy. Yes to the life we’re building together.”

Emeli Sande, Adele Roberts, Munroe Bergdorf and more were among the first people to congratulate the pair online.

Throughout her career, Lady Phyll has been a champion for the LGBTQIA+ community. In particular, UK Black Pride – a celebration of LGBTQIA people of African, Asian, Caribbean, Latin American and Middle Eastern descent – has become one of the most pivotal moments in the LGBTQIA+ calendar.

In October this year, Lady Phyll guest-edited our Struggle and Liberation issue to celebrate Black History Month. You can get your copy here. Lady Phyll is also a patron of DIVA Charitable Trust.
